OEKO-TEX® LEATHER STANDARD Requirements

To achieve OEKO-TEX® LEATHER STANDARD certification, leather articles must undergo rigorous testing for harmful chemicals. This includes:

  • Banned & controlled substances – including azo dyes, chromium VI, PFAS, formaldehyde, lead, and cadmium
  • Compliance with international regulations – including EU REACH, ECHA SVHC candidate list, and the EU POP Regulation

Product Classes - tailored to how close items are worn to the skin: 

- Class 1: Babies and toddlers

- Class 2: Direct skin contact (e.g. leather jackets, gloves, shoes)

- Class 3: No direct skin contact (e.g. belts, bags)

- Class 4: Furnishing materials (e.g. sofas, chairs)

OEKO-TEX® LEATHER STANDARD Application Process
  1. Application: Complete the application form and submit a representative material sample.
  2. Review: A Shirley® technical officer will review your documentation and ensure the submitted sample meets initial eligibility criteria.
  3. Testing: Our expert lab team will establish specific test parameters and carry out detailed analysis to check for harmful substances.
  4. Evaluation: Results are assessed against the relevant product class standards.
  5. On-Site Audit: A qualified Shirley® auditor will conduct an on-site assessment to verify your operations.
  6. Certificate Issued: Upon successful evaluation, a certificate is granted (valid for 12 months).
